Obsidian Fleet policy regarding the destruction of Romulus

Obsidian Fleet's Admiralty carefully considered the ramifications of including the events of the new Star Trek movie into its Fleet Canon. Naturally some elements had to be excluded - the destruction of Vulcan and the entire alternate timeline, for example, would have erased our simming history, so we couldn't take everything from the new movie and include it verbatim. However, the sole element of the destruction of Romulus might serve to produce a number of great storylines without forcing a rewrite of our entire history.

After a consultation process involving the fleet's players, commanding officers, and Fleet Council, a vote was needed by the latter group, taking into account a vote of the commanding officers, as to which of the options - 'destroy Romulus', 'don't destroy Romulus' and 'allow COs to decide for their sim' - to adopt for Obsidian Fleet's future.

However, a desire for unity amongst the fleet's sims - for this makes transfers and promotions easier on the logistical side, but more importantly keeps us together as a Fleet and everything consistent - and a clever suggestion by one of the Fleet's Advisors led to a modification of the options. The 'let the COs choose' option was modified to allow current COs (those appointed on or before January 9th, 2010) to opt their sim out of the destruction of Romulus, but new sim COs would be required to accept Fleet Canon. This move was taken to ensure consistency and community and help move the Fleet toward the future - because the Star Trek films created by J.J. Abrams are the future of the franchise, and it would be foolhardy to ignore them.

The final vote was thusly taken on the following options:
  • Yes - Romulus should be destroyed
  • No - Romulus should not be destroyed
  • Let current COs choose whether or not Romulus is destroyed for their sim's storyline, but new COs will be required to follow the Fleet Canon.
Ultimately, the third of these options was made Fleet Law by the Council's vote, which provides a good compromise between those wishing to accept the destruction, those preferring to keep things the way they were, and those wishing for Fleet unity on the matter.

As was previously stated, sims not including the destruction of Romulus had an opt-out 'grandfathering' clause available to them. Such sims are required to indicate that they are not following the greater fleet's inclusion of this element, and are also required to be listed below so that players wishing to sim on a unit that does not include the planet's destruction may easily find such a sim. That list will be provided here shortly.
